The Sarpy County Leadership Legacy Group is coordinating a pickleball tournament at the new Smash Park Pickleball facility in LaVista on August 24, 2024. The purpose of the fundraiser is twofold: Raise awareness of food insecurity in Sarpy County and begin to fix the immediate need in our schools of helping to pay down student’s school lunch debts, focusing first on graduation seniors. The long-term goal of the project is to be a yearly fundraiser to raise money to help school children in Sarpy County facing food insecurity.
The facts are startling:
- 9% of children in Sarpy County are food insecure.
- School lunches are often the only dependable meal these children receive.
- The school lunch debt balance in Sarpy County is at nearly $148,000 per year in Sarpy County.
- Why is the debt so large in Sarpy County? When compared to OPS students who are not required to pay for food received in schools, the majority of Sarpy County Students are required to pay for all food received (including breakfast and lunches).
If you are a family experiencing food insecurity, we encourage you to contact your child’s school to complete the Free & Reduced Lunch application. By completing this simple form, your school could receive funds to help alleviate hunger, even if your family does not qualify.
