Program Description: Assists low-income people in improving the energy efficiency of their homes. Outcome: Energy consumption and energy costs are reduced. Low-income people live in healthier, safer homes.

Type of Assistance Available: Homes are evaluated, using an energy audit, to determine the most effective energy and cost saving measures to be made. The amount of assistance available to each home is limited and determined by the results of the energy audit.

Eligible Work: The measures identified at each home are specific to the home and determined by an energy audit. Typical measures include: doors replacements, attic, wall, and/or floor insulation, air sealing, duct sealing, and furnace and water heater inspections. Each home differs and not all homes will receive all measures.

Program Eligibility: The applicant’s total household income cannot exceed the established income 200% guidelines for the program. Households receiving Aid to Dependent Children (ADC) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and households that have received utility assistance from Health and Human Services (HHS) in the past year are automatically eligible for the program. The program is available to homeowners as well as renters and must have a landlord permission form completed. Mobile homes are also eligible for the program. Homes that were previously weatherized 15 years and older are eligible for repeat Weatherization services.

Program Availability: Homes must be located in Pawnee, Johnson, Nemaha, Richardson, Sarpy, Cass, or Otoe County. Program Requirements: Prior to being weatherized, the home must be free of the following: structural or mechanical systems in need of extensive repair; dangerous sanitation problems; severe moisture problems; harmful pesticide residue; hazardous pest or insect infestations; excessive peeling paint on a home built prior to 1978; and malfunctioning combustion appliances which require repairs outside the scope of the Weatherization Program.
